Sequential Prophet 5/10

Vintage 5 and 10 voice polyphonic synths return

$3499.00 / $4299.00

Zero doubt in my mind that these synths just killed the market for the vintage 40+ year old Prophet 5 [mostly over $8,000.00] on their introductory day. The vintage 40+ year old Prophet 10 is a little different from the brand new model, but still [for $15,000.00] you’d have to be awash in toy money to go vintage for that too in my opinion.

Of course the new Prophets have a number of modern upgrades like USB, MIDI, 200 user and 200 factory presets instead of 40, both the rev1/2 filters and the rev3 filter, and a ‘vintage’ knob that varies the oscillators, envelopes, amplifiers and other parameters from a temperamental rev1 through a modern stable rev4. There is also channel aftertouch on the keyboard.

I think touring musicians that already use the Prophet 5/10 are going to rejoice with having new hardware. People with five, ten or more flagship synths as well, will really enjoy adding a Prophet 5/10 to their collection. It is a very cool and historical synth.

Note that Dave Smith did mention that Prophet 5/10 desktop modules would be released and “hopefully shipping around the end of the year”. I know a number of people that will jump on the modules; they do not have space for a 61 key synth; they will be very happy.

All that said though, my bias is that I tend to look forward more than backwards. I can not even begin to imagine why someone wouldn’t want a Prophet X and/or Prophet 6 before they got a Prophet 5/10.

There are a lot of features in a more modern Sequential synthesizer that are not in the Prophet 5/10, like stereo oscillators and output, sub-oscillator, arpeggiator, sequencer, effects, layers, split keyboards…

There are numerous reasons the Prophet 5/10s are legendary and still sought after even 40 years later. They are great synths. Now you can get an updated and reliable one without having to go toy clone level if that ever materializes. The Prophet 5/10s are true masterpieces. Still, be sure a vintage design synth is what you want. A modern Sequential design may suit your needs better.

Thanks!

POLY MOD
  • Sources: filter envelope and oscillator B
  • Destinations: oscillator A frequency, oscillator A pulse width, filter cutoff
VINTAGE KNOB
  • Recreates the characteristics of various Prophet-5 models by varying the behavior of oscillators, envelopes, amplifiers, and other parameters. Go from a very stable “4” — as in Prophet-5 Rev4, (the new version) — all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, the rarest and most temperamental of all Prophet-5s.
